Work From Home Scams Are Running Rampant
How to Avoid Home Based Business Scams
By Roxanne Green
The cost of living is rising and wages are not. Gas prices go up, but income doesn’t. The cost of groceries to feed our families goes up, but income doesn’t. The cost of everything we need to live goes up, but incomes do not. Many people are looking for ways to supplement their income.
Unfortunately, hundreds of people every day are losing their life savings or spending money they don’t have to start a home based business. The majority of these “opportunities” are structured so the part time person has little to no chance of success. People are losing money so others can get rich.
Gifting programs are also on the rise. This is where someone tells you that you need to “gift” them a couple hundred to a few thousand dollars. In return, you advertise the “deal” and others “gift” you this amount. These scams even go as far as to quote IRS publication 950. What they don’t tell unsuspecting people is giving a gift is legal as long as it’s not a business and you’re not out to make a profit. That is the key and why gifting programs are highly illegal.
Illegal pyramid schemes are another thing to watch out for. These are so easy to identify, but also so easy to get involved with. An illegal pyramid scheme is where there is no physical product being sold. Whenever you work from home, you must be involved in a company that sells actual products and pays you for moving those products to the end consumer. If your product is an ebook or music or a discount card or electronically delivered information that you can find for free on the internet, you are involved in an illegal pyramid scheme. Many of these companies are getting shut down on a daily basis. You can research this very easily by going to google.com and searching for “burnlounge”. They were one of the first companies to get shut down for selling the rights to music downloads and making it into a business opportunity. There MUST be an actual product.
The next thing you want to do is ask yourself “Would I pay X dollars (the company’s RETAIL price) for this product if there were no opportunity attached?” If the answer is NO – stay away. If you have to join to get the “good prices” – run the other way.
You will also see ads that scream “Sign up, do nothing and make money”. These are illegal. If you don’t need to do anything, why would they need you?? Just to take your money. Run the other way. A business takes work. You can not expect to sign up, sit back and do nothing and make money.
“Get rich quick” does not exist unless you rob a bank. Then you may end up in jail. If you are looking to get rich QUICK, you do not want a home based business. HOWEVER…if you are willing to put in time, effort and a little money, you CAN get rich. It will not happen overnight, but with persistence and a team to help you, it will happen.
There is good news!!
There are legitimate businesses out there. Do your research. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Find a good company. This is a must. Some companies are structured so they will be successful, but you will not. You must look for a company where you can be successful as well. Roxanne Green is a business coach & mentor and has been evaluating companies for almost 3 years. She has found a great company to work with and will be happy to help you on your path to success.

Thnks Roxanne,
That is probably the best information I have read about being careful when choosing a home based business.
I hope more people get to read this before they find themselves caught up in one of those scams.

Excellent post, Roxanne …
The scamola that gets my goat moreso than any of the others is —
“Sit on your butt, do less than nothing, and make more money than God”!
I just want to spit nails when I see those ads.

Hi Roxanne,
It really is so very sad. So many people out there just want to get a piece of the dream. But they’re so overwhelmed by all the puke out there that it makes telling the difference really hard … & then along comes someone like you who shares the truth from the heart in an effort to shine a 500,000 candle power light in the darkness for all entrepreneures to follow.
I just hope for their sakes they do.
I appreciate you,
Bill Tessore

Hey Roxanne,
This is some really sound and great advice. Another interesting thing about the IRS that I have not been able to research, but was told by someone I consider to be a reliable source, is that the IRS doesn’t care where your income comes from. So they really wouldn’t be the defining authority on what’s legal and what’s not when it comes to MAKING money, only on paying taxes.
Great stuff. Thank you and keep it rolling!
