Working from home is a challenge. Sometimes I forget what day it is. The days all run together. Some days I get up and get so engrossed in what I’m doing that day that I forget to shower until almost dinner time. I had one of those days last week. But…I went grocery shopping during my stupor and ran into quite a few people I hadn’t seen in years looking like a complete slob. Oh well…

Anyway…yesterday I got up and did my hair and was going to make a video. I haven’t done that in a long time. I was in the bathroom doing my hair and (if I do say so myself) it looked GREAT!! I come out to my office and turn on the webcam. No matter what I did, I looked like I was BALD on one side of my head. BALD!! I ran back into the bathroom and my hair looked great. What in the world?

So I yell to my daughter – “Kate – come out here!!” She comes running out and I say “I’m bald!!”

“You’re not bald, Mom”
“YES I AM – Look!!” as I’m pointing to the computer screen.

Katie assures me that I’m not bald and it’s just the settings on the webcam. So she messes with the settings for a bit to no avail. I’m still half bald in front on the webcam. She says “I’ll prove it to you, Mom. You’re not bald.” She goes and gets her camera. She takes a few pictures and lo & behold, my hair is bright red and I’M BALD on one side!!!” She insists that it’s just the camera.

Yup. The camera adds 100 pounds and makes me bald on one side of my head!!! Needless to say, I won’t be in front of the camera anytime soon.

What horrible things does the camera do to you?

My Dog is my Steve Urkel

You know how when you were little there was always one kid who was kind of annoying, but you tolerated him or her because they were kinda cute at times and when no one else was around they were OK company? It may have been a younger sibling or a neighborhood kid.

You know…the one that some days you just go out of your way to avoid because you’ve got things to do and this person would just get in the way and distract you? Kind of like Steve Urkel.

My dog is that kid!!!

My Dog BrutusDon’t get me wrong – I love my Brutus. He’s an 11 year old 135 lb. black lab. But…he’s NEEDY. When my daughter is here, he acts just like her little brother and follows her everywhere. When she’s gone, big sister duties fall to me. He wants to be stuck under my desk breathing his hot dog breath on my leg. Or licking my hand or shin trying to get my attention. He’ll scoot closer and closer until I stop what I’m doing and just pay attention to him. If I go outside, he wants to go outside. If I’m in the bedroom, he wants to be in the bedroom. Close the door before he gets there and he lets out a HUGE sigh and sinks down to the floor while pushing his body at the closed door. You can’t not know he’s there.

This morning I woke up and actually snuck out of my bedroom. The door to the back deck goes out from my bedroom. My husband had put Brutus outside and I just wanted to get up and have a relaxing cup of coffee…ALONE. So I snuck out of my bedroom and quietly slinked into the kitchen to get my coffee. Sometimes I swear the dog’s hearing is going and other times (like this morning) I swear he has bionic hearing. Just like Jaime Sommers in the Bionic Woman.

Brutus NEVER barks. Only if he’s chasing another animal out of his area or he wants to come in. Even then, half the time he just watches an animal go through his area and doesn’t even bother to get up.

So…what do I hear as I’m tiptoeing away from the coffee pot with my cup of coffee in hand like a thief in the night?

WUFF Just like Steve Urkel showing up at the most inopportune moment. And there’s no way to ignore him. He wouldn’t have barked if he thought I was still sleeping. So I set my coffee down knowing if I don’t go get him, he’s going to bark again, this time louder. Just like Urkel knocking on the door. You can’t hide.

So…I let him in and he sits at my feet breathing his hot doggy breath on me while I sip my coffee. He’s content as can be now…

Thankfully my daughter will be home tomorrow. :-)

Did I mention I love working from home?

How Dangerous is Lack Mentality?

I would like the opinions of my readers on this. Please comment after reading this post.

A while back I downloaded a free ebook online. The author was giving away the ebook and accepting donations for charity. Now, many people use an ebook as a lead capture. There’s nothing wrong with that. This particular ebook, however, was endorsed by people like Jack Canfield, Joel Comm, Marcia Wieder, Alex Mandossian, Byron Katie, Mike Dooley and a few others. I figured he was a reputable person.

All throughout the ebook, the author said extra bonus material is available at his membership site and linked to it. He even included an appendix where he listed all of the bonus material that was supposedly available in his members area. He even acted as if he was doing the reader a favor by including a “code” to enter to get a one month free trial of the members area. I don’t know about you, but I’ve joined many member areas where I got a free or $1 trial and found the material useful and continued on at $27, $97, even $147 per month. If the content is good and added to on a monthly basis, the membership is worth it. Anyone who wants to be successful in life knows that it’s very important to be learning on a consistent basis.

When I signed up for the members area, NONE of the bonus material referenced in the book was there. When I asked about it, as did many others in the member area, I got the brush off from the author. At one point he told me that the material in the bonus area is “better than the original bonuses”. I left the member area letting the author know that I was disappointed that he not only made false promises in his book, but on his sales page as well (the sales page listed the same material that the appendix in the book listed).

Yesterday, almost a full month after I voice my concerns, I received the following email:

The comments in italics were added by me. The remainder of the comments in parentheses are the author’s comments.

Hi Roxanne,

I saw your comment from ages ago regarding the other materials, and wanted to get back to you.

We’ve added the Faculty Hour now so you can call in once a week and ask any question on any topic of (author’s assistant name here).

And we are (finally!) launching a higher level of (member area) which will have the remaining resources (spread over three months though, so people don’t just join for a day then download and leave – it’s tricky with membership sites).

Curious – what’s your business/site? What are you up to?

(Author name)

I sat there for a minute after reading with my mouth hanging open in disbelief. Here is part of my response to him:

It’s an interesting comment you make about not making material promised in your book available right away because you think people will download it and leave. You are coming from a scarcity mindset. That surprises me based on what you’ve done by giving away your book. If you are always concerned about people ripping you off, that is what will happen. I heard of another trainer with a members area who allowed nothing downloadable in his members area for fear that a group of people would get together, pool their money and have one person join, download the material and pass it around. That trainer is long gone now. When you come from a lack mindset, you will continue to attract lack. Sure, you may have success for a time, but it will not last. I feel very sorry for you. Maybe you should consult with the people who endorsed your book and discuss this with them. I can’t imagine Joel Comm, Marcia Wieder, Alex Mandossian, Byron Katie, Mike Dooley or any of the people who gave you an endorsement agreeing with your philosophy.

Will there always be people who join, get the free stuff and leave? Absolutely. However, if you make the ongoing content good enough, they will stay even though they got the “good stuff” up front. I continue my membership with a few different sites because they provide great ongoing content. Most of them gave me a free trial and made a ton of great content available during that free trial. Those of us who are true entrepreneurs understand the importance of ongoing learning. That is who you want to attract.

I also suggested that if the author feels the material available now is better, he could provide the bonuses he promised in the book and then, in the next month step people up to a new level where the “better material” is available – incentive for them to hang around for at least a month, right?

So…what are your thoughts on this author’s lack mentality? Agree? Disagree? All comments are welcome!

**UPDATE** – I’ve received about 20 emails on this topic. Please comment here on the blog so we can all mastermind together if you have an opinion on this. Thanks!!**

Make it a great day!!

Anger, Hatred & Name Calling Only Hurts YOU

I am saddened by all of the anger and animosity I see being spewed around the internet.  I think the worst part is that these angry, hurtful, nasty things are being spread by so-called Christians.  Do we need to be aware of what’s going on in the world?  Yes.  Do we need to post horrible name calling nastiness about someone who we THINK isn’t doing a good job?  ABSOLUTELY NOT!!  My God teaches me to love my enemies.  My God teaches me that no matter what happens, I am His child and I will be OK.

It saddens me to see people claiming to be a child of God and then getting all caught up in name calling and rumor spreading.  It saddens me to see people claiming to be a child of God and then harboring such animosity for others that they are probably making themselves sick.   Then they use God as an excuse.  “Well…I felt God led me to speak up because if I don’t no one will.”  I’m sorry, but God would NEVER lead you to name calling and spreading rumors.  God would not tell you to be nasty toward another human being.  That is not how He works.  If you are a believer in the bible and our creator, you know that you will always be protected and OK.

I really don’t want to make this a religious post.  It’s more of an awareness post to let those who are being nasty and calling names to others that it will only end up hurting you in the long run.  We will never agree 100% with everyone. Just because someone does something you do not like does not mean you have to let it control your life. Anger and hatred will destroy YOU if you hold on to them. They don’t hurt the other person, they hurt you.
