I am a firm believer in not saying anything behind someone’s back that you won’t say to their face. It upsets me when I hear someone talking about someone else as soon as that person is out of earshot. When you do things like this, it doesn’t matter how valid you believe the “gossip” is, it is still gossip. It is still bad mouthing and it still makes YOU look bad instead of the person you are trashing.
Do people really not realize this? If you want to use someone as an example, you can tell a story without saying who the person is that you are referencing. Especially when that person has just left the group and has friends still present. But even if there are no friends present, you still look bad.
If you feel like trashing someone or telling stories about them to prove some point, tell a generic story without names and distinguishing facts or keep your mouth shut. It’s the polite thing to do.
