I am a work at home wife, mom and entrepreneur. I currently have a home based business and an at home JOB. Contrary to popular belief, the two are NOT the same.

A work at home JOB pays you based on hours that you work or output that you do. You generally have a boss that you are accountable to. That person gives you your work and you do it. You follow their guidelines for how things are done. With a work at home JOB you are trading hours (or output) for dollars.

A work at home BUSINESS (AKA Home Based Business) is a little different. With a work at home business, you control your hours, output and method of doing the business. If you’re one of the lucky ones, you will have a team of people who will help you decide the methods, but it is still up to you to be self motivated enough to do the work. You spend time in the beginning building your business. During this time, you may not make a whole lot of money. It’s entirely dependent on how much time, effort and sometimes money you put into it. Once you’ve built it, you get paid what we call recurring income. Recurring income means that you do the work right one time and get paid over and over again. I’ll show you how that works in a bit.

Everybody knows that work at home scams are running rampant. There are a lot of them out there. Unfortunately, that makes it hard for the legitimate business opportunities. You probably know someone who has, at some point, either tried a home business or knows someone who has tried a home business and lost money. Most of these scams will be easy to spot. They try to tell you any number of things to get you to join. Here are a few of my favorites:

• It’s easy – anyone can do it.
• You can quit your job and work from home
• Sign up, we do all of the work for you and you make money

BS!!! Having your own home based business is NOT easy!! The payoff a few years down the road is amazing, however ONLY IF you work hard for 1-3 years to build your foundation. Plan on putting time, money and effort into your home based business. It’s your business. If you opened a shore store, would you realistically expect to just sit back and watch customers come in and buy shoes all day with no help from you? No advertising? No assistance? No one to open the store and close the store and man the cash registers? That’s a little ridiculous, don’t you think? Just as ridiculous as expecting to sign up with a company and start your own home based business with the intention of sitting back, living the good life while watching the money roll in. Come on!! Let’s get real. It does NOT work that way.

Too many people start a home based business and are told they will have “time freedom and money freedom”. This will happen – EVENTUALLY - IF you put time and effort into it FIRST.

It’s not your fault you might think a home business is easy. It’s not your fault you might think that it’s just a matter of “having” your own home business instead of actually “working” your own home business. Look at all of the ads on the internet and the commercials on TV for home based businesses. These ads are called “lead capture ads”. What happens is this – you respond to one of these ads. You fill out your information and expect to hear back from one person about this great home based business you saw. NOT!! In reality, you fill out your information and have now given your name, email address, mailing address and phone number to a bunch of people who will buy your information and try to hype you into spending hundreds or even THOUSANDS of dollars on their latest “deal”. And their good. They make it sound like you really need to spend THOUSANDS to have your own home business.

Now, don’t get me wrong – there are start up costs to having your own home based business. These start up costs shouldn’t run more than $500 or so. You should not have to spend thousands of dollars to start a home based business.

If you do not have a source of income now, UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you start a home based business. This is where a lot of people get scammed. Remember that I said you have to work hard for 1-3 years and then reap the rewards? Well…you need an income in the meantime. If you are told any different, you are being lied to. Big, fat, unscrupulous lies. And it’s not the fault of the people telling you the lies either. THEY, themselves, don’t know they are spreading these lies until they are already “in” and it’s too late for the lies to stop. If they stop spreading them now, others will know they lied. So they just quit. They give up and take the loss of thousands of dollars. After all, no one wants to admit they were gullible enough to be swindled, right? It’s NOT YOUR FAULT!!
