For years I’ve suffered from frequent heartburn (acid reflux). Prilosec OTC is always in my house. The only problem with Prilosec is that you have to take it BEFORE you get heartburn, which means take it every day or suffer. Regardless, I’ve been a faithful purchaser of it. I tried the generic omeprazole but it didn’t work as well.
There have been many times when I’ve gotten heartburn and realized that I did not take my prilosec and now I have to suffer with it. If you’ve ever had chronic heartburn, you know how bad it can get. Nothing works to get rid of it once it’s here. It’s painful and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy.
I’ve been seeing commercials for this new Zegerid OTC and have been checking the shelves at local stores for a few weeks now to see if I could find it. Finally, on Friday when I went grocery shopping, I found it and decided to try it. I had been out of my prilosec so was starting to get heartburn while I was shopping. I looked at the label and it’s also omeprazole, so I wasn’t sure how it would work. I figured it would be like past experiences with these types of products and wouldn’t kick in until the next day. I mentally geared up for an evening of suffering.
As soon as I left the store, I opened the bottle and took one of the Zegerid pills. I didn’t think much more about it until a couple hours later when I realized there was NO HEARTBURN!! I was shocked as the heartburn had already begun when I took the pill.
I set out to find out why the same dosage of omeprazole would work differently in different products. Now, I’m no doctor and I have no idea if this is correct, but here’s the best I can come up with. Prilosec is designed to be DELAYED RELEASE!! I did not know that. What kind of person suffering from acid reflux wants a product that works hours later?? On the other hand, Zegrid has an ingredient in it that “allows absorption of this omeprazole product”. I’m assuming that is why Zegrid works when Prilosec doesn’t.
It’s official – I am a new Zegerid OTC customer!!!!

Have you tried or heard of the wedge pillow? I know several people that use the pillow and need no drugs. You put your pillow on top of the wedge pillow to make it more comfortable. Bed Bath and Beyond sells it.
